From the “really good” eye cream she loves to her top face-transforming makeup tips for women over 50, Bobbi Brown consistently shares her decades-worth of makeup knowledge with fans to help them look and feel their best. Now, she’s revealing how to wear a “bold” lip look over 50, and the product she uses to achieve that she says “doesn’t bleed into fine lines,”: Jones Road’s The Lip Pencil.

Though she’s not a fan of a bold lip on herself, she loves it on others. “Some of my favorite looks as a makeup artist are those in which the look starts fairly neutral and then I’ll take it up significantly with a signature bold lip. It immediately transforms the model into someone who is confident and excited. A strong lip can do just that—inspire you.”

Brown tells Prevention that she’s “really excited” about her brand’s shade extension for The Lip Pencil. The four new colors consist of Tulip, Coral, Ruby, and Wine. “I just used them on a shoot and they were so easy to handle and gave really beautiful bold color. Which most lip pencils don’t,” she says. “But the creaminess in these lip pencils…it doesn’t bleed into fine lines.”

In fact, she says for those wanting a bolder shade, these pencils are perfect, whether or not you’re a seasoned lip liner. “The lip pencils are so emollient and easy to work with,” she says.

Wondering how or when to go bold? Brown often recommends selecting certain areas to focus on and keeping the rest straightforward. “Sometimes you may want to add a bolder liner and other times a bolder lip with a nude face,” she recommends. “You look almost like a French girl,” she quips.

As for deciding what color is best for you, she says, “I don’t think that a bright lip has to do with your skin color. It has a lot to do about your lip color and your style. If you are feeling bold you’ll throw a red on. If you’re feeling a little more sultry you’ll go for a deeper one.”

Her pro tip? Create your own hue. “I like to mix it with your nude pencil so you can almost create your own bright. These are pencils and it happens to be such a great formula.”
