My wash day routine for my 4A hair is six steps long: part hair into four sections, detangle, apply hair mask, spritz in a leave-in conditioner, scrunch in a curl cream, and spiral curls with my fingers or a brush. As you can imagine, this process is not quick. Done once a week, it takes me anywhere from one to two hours, depending on the state of my hair. (There’s a reason why it’s called wash day.)

And since curls lack moisture, I get the best results when my hair is sopping wet. To keep my hair from dripping everywhere, I’ll place a towel on the floor and one over my shoulders, I keep one smaller one nearby to scrunch out excess water, and I’ll wear an old shirt to catch any extra drops. After five years of the same routine, I had accepted the added towels to my weekly laundry, thinking there was no way to get around it.

But two months ago, I got a targeted ad on Instagram for the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape ($48) and decided to test it out. Spoiler alert: It has completely improved my wash day routine.

About the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape

  • The 100-percent cotton inner layer absorbs any excess water or oils.
  • It protects clothes from styling products, hairsprays, and makeup.
  • It buttons at the chest so you can go hands-free with your routine.
  • It has two pockets to store hair clips, hair brushes, combs, and any makeup items.

What I Like About the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape

I’ve been using the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape for six weeks now and it has saved me from washing three additional towels a week — which is a huge win. The waterproof tool manages to catch all excess moisture from my hair, keeping me from ruining my clothes, too.

I also love to store all my products and brushes in there while I’m doing my hair. Previously, my bathroom counter would be full of styling product residue as I alternated between multiple products, but now, all the gunk is kept in one spot for super-simple cleanup.

And because the drying cape is lightweight, it packs up easily in my carry-on, allowing me to have the same salon-worthy dry while traveling.

How to Use the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape

To use the cape, simply affix the button at the neck and you’re good to go. I tend to hook all my hair clips on the pocket and slip my comb and hairbrush in there as well, for easy access. Once I’m done with my hair, I’ll rinse the cape in the shower and hang it up to dry using the handy loop on the back. The cape comes with an adhesive hook that I attached to the back of my bathroom door, so once it’s dry, I’ll place it back on its hook until the next use.

What to Consider Before Trying the Monii Hair Drying and Makeup Cape

The cape is compact (just under 15 inches), which is great for my bob-length curls, but might not be as beneficial for longer hair lengths. However, as it doubles as a makeup cape, longer hair types can find use in this function.
